10th Biennial ConferenceThe RAN Conferences

Remember the story of the five blind men who were asked to describe an elephant? One exclaimed “It’s like a wall!”; a second protested, saying the elephant was wrinkled and leathery. The third man, touching the tusks, said they were both in error, and that the elephant was made like a spear. The fourth and fifth also contributed to the confusion.

All were right, yet none had the complete picture.

Conferences have played a key role in guiding the work of RAN since its inception. In fact, the body was born when delegates got together in August 1982 after an international seminar on reading hosted by the Institute of Education of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

In thinking about how best to talk about RAN’s conferences and their place in the life of the association, individual members and partnering chapters, we should see each conference as a gathering of people seeking to learn from experts and each other, renew old friendships and once again be reminded of why we are part of RAN.

2nd PAN-AFRICAN READING FOR ALL CONFERENCE

In October 2001, the Reading Association of Nigeria and the International Reading Association's International Development in Africa Committee hosted the 2nd Pan-African Conference on Reading. More than 300 educators met at the National Women in Development Centre, Abuja, Nigeria, for a conference organized around the theme “Reading for All: Building Communities Where Literacy Thrives.” The roster included educators from 14 African nations, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Reading for All is a collection of 40 papers selected from more than 150 conference presentations. The collection addresses the need to develop materials on best practices in African literacy education and offers a means for people interested in the development of literacy in Africa to share their ideas. Literacy workers, teachers, scholars, education officials, and nongovernmental organizations with an interest in literacy promotion in Africa will find this volume to be a valuable resource.
